Krishnanagar woman found dead; Boyfriend arrested as police uncover hidden marriage and suicide threats

A young woman from Krishnanagar, Nadia, was found dead during Durga Puja, prompting police to arrest her boyfriend under suspicions of involvement in her death. After seven days in custody, the accused was presented in court, where police requested additional custody, citing new evidence that may clarify the circumstances of her death. The investigation has revealed details of a hidden marriage, suicide threats, and significant phone conversations on the day of the incident.

Police discovered that the accused was already married before he entered a relationship with the victim. His first wife, who lives in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas, was located and brought in for questioning. She revealed that she was aware of conversations between the accused and his friend Sourav, during which they allegedly discussed the victim's threats of self-harm. Police obtained audio recordings of these conversations as potential evidence.

The investigation uncovered that, on the day of her death, the victim made 21 calls between noon and 11 p.m. to Sourav, a friend of the accused, to arrange a meeting with the accused, who had switched off his phone. At around 2 p.m., she informed Sourav she had bought kerosene and matches and intended to end her life. Sourav reportedly conveyed this information to the accused’s first wife, who allegedly dismissed the threat.

Evidence points to the victim obtaining kerosene from either her uncle’s shop or her home, where it was regularly used. Forensic examination of her bag, in which traces of kerosene were found, as well as the kerosene bottle retrieved from the scene, suggests she may have carried it with her to the location.

On the day of the incident, the accused was in Ranaghat with another woman, which the victim eventually found out. Late that evening, around 10:12 p.m., he borrowed a friend’s phone to speak to the victim since his own phone was off. Shortly after, around 10:45 p.m., she posted on social media, writing, “No one is responsible for my death,” along with an audio message. Police are examining these final messages and conversations as part of the ongoing investigation into her death.
