The Kolkata Police will begin an intensive 21-day training program for civic volunteers on November 4, hosted at the Police Training School (PTS) in Kolkata. This comprehensive training, structured in a non-residential format, aims to bolster the volunteers' skills across critical law enforcement support areas, public interaction, and procedural adherence. All Kolkata Police units involved in assigning civic volunteers have been directed by Lalbazar, the headquarters of Kolkata Police, to finalize and submit the list of participants by October 28. This first batch of 160 volunteers will set the stage for an ongoing phased rollout, with further batches scheduled to follow.
The 21-day program will focus on equipping civic volunteers with skills necessary for assisting the Kolkata Police in both everyday duties and special assignments. Training modules include crowd management, efficient communication techniques, basic law enforcement protocols, and adherence to standard operational procedures. Volunteers will receive guidance on managing large gatherings, effective conflict resolution, and emergency response tactics, all under the supervision of experienced Kolkata Police instructors. Sessions will take place daily, with a mix of classroom instruction and practical drills.
A key component of the training is familiarization with police-issued equipment and tools relevant to their role. Volunteers will be trained in the correct handling and operational use of this equipment, ensuring preparedness for their duties in public settings. The program also emphasizes observational skills, report writing, and techniques for identifying and documenting potential incidents during patrols. Volunteers will be taught to follow procedures closely, reinforcing police protocols.
In addition to practical training, civic volunteers will participate in exercises designed to build their familiarity with different Kolkata Police units and their specific operational functions. Training includes workshops on protocols for supporting police during emergencies, handling law-and-order situations, and following public safety guidelines. Volunteers will also be briefed on the chain of command and communication hierarchy within the police framework, enabling smooth coordination during active duties.
This program marks the beginning of Kolkata Police’s phased training strategy, intending to cover all civic volunteers in future sessions. By the end of the program, each participant is expected to be capable of providing organized and skilled assistance across various policing activities in Kolkata. This structured training is part of Kolkata Police’s broader objective to professionalize civic volunteers and integrate them effectively into the city’s law enforcement support system.
