Knee-deep water submerges Devkhal Bridge in Bankura, isolating villages and endangering lives

The Devkhal bridge near Shantashram in Bankura's Indas block has been submerged under knee-deep water following significant rainfall in the region. Over the past 24 hours, Bankura district recorded approximately 51.8 millimeters of rain, which has caused the Devkhal to swell considerably. Despite the absence of severe storms due to cyclone Dhanas, the rainfall has had a profound impact on local infrastructure, leading to a crisis for residents who depend on the bridge for daily activities.

Since Friday afternoon, water has surged over the bridge, effectively isolating several villages, including Karishunda, Belbandi, and Paharpur. These communities rely heavily on this vital route to access essential services such as markets, schools, colleges, and health centers. The submerged bridge has become a dangerous obstacle for residents, who are now forced to traverse the hazardous waters to reach their destinations. Eyewitnesses report that the swift current poses a significant risk of injury or drowning.

Local villagers have expressed their frustration over the situation, highlighting that they have repeatedly requested government action to raise the height of the bridge. They point out that the current infrastructure is inadequate to handle the rainfall, leading to frequent submersion of the bridge. Villagers have noted that this issue occurs multiple times each year, making it a recurring challenge that disrupts their lives and livelihoods.

Community leaders have called for immediate government intervention to address the flooding and improve infrastructure. They emphasize that without prompt action, the safety of residents will continue to be jeopardized. Additionally, the isolation of these villages can hinder access to medical services, education, and economic opportunities, exacerbating the hardships faced by the local population.
