As Kali Puja approaches, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed concern over potential threats during the festival, urging law enforcement to stay vigilant. In a meeting held virtually from Nabanna with District Collectors of regions affected by Cyclone Dana, the Chief Minister asked police forces to intensify security measures and prevent any attempts at violence or explosions.
During the meeting, Banerjee emphasized the need for enhanced police intelligence and the involvement of the Special Task Force (STF) to ensure the safety of festival-goers. She highlighted the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent any untoward incidents during the celebrations. “Fireworks are common during Kali Puja, but we must ensure that no mischief occurs. Police intelligence should be strengthened, and STF assistance utilized where necessary,” Mamata Banerjee stated.
Addressing East Midnapore’s District Magistrate, Purnendu Majhi, the CM raised concerns about fireworks-related disturbances during Kali Puja, urging him to coordinate with local police to prevent any incidents. The CM’s emphasis on security reflects her apprehension about possible threats to public peace. She further noted that certain groups might attempt to exploit festive gatherings to instigate communal tensions, calling on intelligence services and police sources to counter these threats.
In a separate discussion with officials from North 24 Parganas, Banerjee cautioned about plans to create unrest in Kolkata. Referring to certain disruptive individuals, Mamata Banerjee remarked, “Some people intend to stir communal tensions during Kali Puja. They’re not political leaders; they’re troublemakers. Their plans must be thwarted.”
She also referenced a recent incident in Howrah, where a murder occurred amid Cyclone Dana’s disruptions, suggesting that some individuals take advantage of calamities and festivals alike to commit offenses. Mamata Banerjee urged the Jhargram District Magistrate to secure the borders, preventing disruptive elements from entering during the festive season.
