Cyclone Dana - Updates

  • 05:30 am: The cyclone is on the northern coast of Odisha and the rear sector is now entering into land. The landfall process is expected to go on for another 1-2 hours, according to the IMD.
  • 02:30 am: CM Mamata Banerjee, who announced that she would remain awake and vigilant the whole night in the wake of cyclone Dana, was at 2:30 am in the Nabanna control room where she was briefed about the current situation. She even dialed all the DMs of the districts on alert and talked to them.

  • 02:28 am: "Landfall process continues and centre lies close to odisha coast near habalikhati nature camp (bhitarkanika)
    The severe cyclonic storm “dana” (pronounced as dana) over northwest bay of bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 0130 hrs ist of today, the 25th october, over northwest bay of bengal near latitude 20.60° n and longitude 87.00°e, close to odisha coast near habalikhati nature camp (bhitarkanika) 20 km south-southeast of dhamara (odisha).
    It is very likely to continiue to move north-northwestwards and cross north odisha coast close to bhitarkanika and dhamara (odisha) during next 1 hour as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph
    ," says IMD.
  • 02:04 am: After nearly 3 hours of landfall initiation of cyclone Dana, little rainfall has started in several areas of Kolkata. Till now, a mild breeze of air and light rain is being witnessed. However, Digha has been the worst affected area in Bengal so far.
  • 02:01 am: IMD in its new Tweet, said "THE SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM “DANA” (PRONOUNCED AS DANA) OVER NORTHWEST BAY OF BENGAL MOVED NORTH-NORTHWESTWARDS WITH A SPEED OF 15 KMPH DURING PAST 06 HOURS AND LAY CENTRED AT 0030 HRS IST OF TODAY, THE 25TH OCTOBER, OVER THE SAME REGION, NEAR LATITUDE 20.60° N AND LONGITUDE 87.05°E, ABOUT 50 KM NORTHEAST OF PARADIP (ODISHA), 30 KM SOUTHEAST OF DHAMARA (ODISHA) AND 160 KM SOUTHWEST OF SAGAR ISLAND (WEST BENGAL). IT IS VERY LIKELY TO CONTINUE TO MOVE NORTH-NORTHWESTWARDS AND CROSS NORTH ODISHA COAST CLOSE TO BHITARKANIKA AND DHAMARA (ODISHA) DURING NEXT 2 HOURS AS A SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM WITH A WIND SPEED OF 100-110 KMPH GUSTING 120 KMPH."
  • 12:37 am: IMD director Manorama Mohanty says Cyclone 'Dana' landfall to continue until the morning of October 25. Gusty winds witnessed in Digha, Purba Medinipur region of West Bengal.
  • 12:24 am: According to IMD: “Landfall process has commenced (at around 11:30 pm)and the forward sector of the wall cloud region is entering into land. The landfall process would continue till today, the 25th of October morning. The system is continuously surveilling the Doppler Weather Radar at Paradip.”
  • 11:39 pm: Over 2.1 lakh people evacuated in West Bengal, more than 1 lakh at relief camps ahead of Dana's landfall.

  • 10:30 pm: "THE SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM “DANA” (PRONOUNCED AS DANA) OVER NORTHWEST BAY OF BENGAL MOVED NORTH-NORTHWESTWARDS WITH A SPEED OF 13 KMPH DURING PAST 3 HOURS AND LAY CENTRED AT 2230 HRS IST OF TODAY, THE 24TH OCTOBER, OVER THE SAME REGION, NEAR LATITUDE 20.30° N AND LONGITUDE 87.20°E, ABOUT 50 KM EAST OF PARADIP (ODISHA), 60 KM SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF DHAMARA (ODISHA) AND 170 KM SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF SAGAR ISLAND (WEST BENGAL)." - posted the IMD.
  • 9:22 pm: Isro said its satellites have been tracking the cyclonic storm 'Dana' that is approaching the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal, providing real-time data to aid disaster management efforts. It said, polar-orbiting satellite EOS-06 and geostationary satellite INSAT-3DR are regularly providing valuable information on the cyclone status.
