Union Cabinet approves Rs 6,798 cr railway projects in Bihar and Andhra, announces Ashwini Vaishnaw

The Union Cabinet has approved two railway infrastructure projects valued at approximately Rs 6,798 crore. These initiatives are designed to improve connectivity within Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, focusing on enhancing the transportation network to facilitate economic growth and regional development. The projects aim to address the growing need for efficient rail transport and strengthen trade routes.

One of the key projects involves doubling the railway lines along the Narkatiaganj-Raxaul-Sitamarhi-Darbhanga and Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur sections, covering a total distance of 256 km. This expansion is expected to significantly improve rail connectivity, not only within Bihar but also with neighboring regions, including Nepal and North-East India. This initiative is anticipated to bolster passenger and freight movement, ultimately benefiting the local economy.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the strategic importance of the doubling project for the Mithilanchal region. He noted that the project would enhance connectivity to North Bihar and the North-East, creating a vital transport corridor along the India-Nepal border. The construction will include around 40 major bridges, further improving access to the railway network in the region.

The second approved project involves constructing a new railway line between Errupalem and Namburu, spanning 57 km. This line will traverse the districts of NTR Vijayawada and Guntur, while also passing through Khammam district in Telangana. This new connection aims to improve regional connectivity, particularly for local industries, and enhance mobility for the surrounding population.

These projects are projected to extend the Indian Railways network by approximately 313 km across eight districts in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The estimated completion time for these projects is around five years. The government anticipates that improved rail infrastructure will lead to reduced travel times and lower logistical costs, making transportation more efficient. In addition to enhancing connectivity, these initiatives are expected to generate significant employment opportunities. The government estimates approximately 10.6 million human-days of work will be created during the construction phase, contributing to local economies through increased job availability and spending by workers.

The government has also emphasized the environmental benefits of these projects. By improving rail transport, the initiatives are expected to lower carbon dioxide emissions significantly, contributing to India's climate goals. The expected reduction in emissions is estimated at around 168 crore kilograms, which is comparable to planting seven crore trees, highlighting the projects' potential for promoting sustainable transportation.
