Kolkata metro to be extended till Hooghly's Chuchura? Here's what Railway minister says
A DMU train traveling from Katihar to Jogbani narrowly avoided derailment in Purnia, Bihar, thanks to the swift actions of its pilot. The train's wheels became entangled with a 10 mm iron rod that had been deliberately placed on the railway tracks near the Ranipatara railway station. Fortunately, the pilot noticed the obstruction just in time, applying the emergency brakes and stopping the train before a major disaster could occur.
Railway officials reported that the incident occurred shortly before the train's scheduled arrival at the Ranipatara station. As the train approached at a reduced speed, the pilot spotted the iron rod on the track—a concerning and hazardous situation. His quick thinking and immediate response were crucial in averting what could have been a severe accident that might have resulted in injury or loss of life among passengers.
After halting the train, railway staff and local authorities were alerted to the situation. A team of railway personnel promptly responded to the scene, successfully extracting the iron rod from the train's wheels after considerable effort. Once the obstruction was cleared, the train was able to resume its journey without further delay. All passengers on board were unharmed, and the incident ended without any casualties.
In light of this incident, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has launched a thorough investigation to determine how the rod was placed on the tracks and to identify any individuals responsible for this act of sabotage. CCTV footage from the Ranipatara station is being reviewed to gather evidence and aid in the investigation. Authorities are treating this matter with urgency to ensure the safety and security of rail passengers across the region.
Recent attempts to derail trains have been reported in several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, raising concerns about passenger safety. The presence of any foreign object on the railway tracks, especially large and heavy items like iron rods or stones, poses a serious risk to train operations and necessitates heightened vigilance. This is not the first incident of its kind in recent weeks. Just two weeks prior, on October 9, 2024, an attempt was made to derail the Islam Pur-Hatia Express train on the Patna-Gaya rail route when a large stone was placed on the tracks. In both cases, the alertness and quick actions of train pilots were instrumental in preventing disasters.
