CM Mamata forms 9-member Task Force to enhance healthcare safety and security

The West Bengal government has announced the formation of a State Level Task Force aimed at enhancing the safety, security, and overall improvement of the healthcare system in the state. This initiative comes in the wake of rising concerns over healthcare infrastructure and the need for better security measures within medical facilities. The task force is a nine-member panel that includes key government officials and representatives from the medical community.

The task force will be chaired by the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, with other members including the Home Secretary, the Director General of Police, and the Principal Secretary for Health and Family Welfare. Additionally, it includes the Commissioner of Police for Kolkata, two representatives each from senior and junior resident doctors, one representative from the State Level Grievance Redressal Committee, and one female student representative. This diverse composition aims to ensure that various perspectives within the healthcare system are considered in decision-making.

The primary responsibilities of the task force will encompass several critical areas aimed at bolstering healthcare infrastructure. They will focus on the ongoing development of on-duty rooms, washrooms, drinking water facilities, and the installation of CCTV surveillance systems to enhance security in hospitals. Additionally, the deployment of police and security personnel, including mobile surveillance teams, will be prioritized to ensure the safety of both patients and healthcare workers.

One of the significant initiatives to be implemented is the establishment of a centralized helpline and panic button system. This will provide immediate assistance to healthcare workers and patients in distress, ensuring a rapid response to emergencies. Furthermore, the task force will oversee the creation of a centralized referral system and a real-time bed availability information system to streamline patient care and improve resource allocation across hospitals.

The task force will also be responsible for monitoring the functioning of various committees, including the Security Audit Committee and Internal Complaints Committee. This oversight is crucial for maintaining accountability and ensuring that the recommendations of these committees are effectively implemented.

Collaboration and coordination with all stakeholders will be vital for the task force's success. By engaging with medical professionals, healthcare institutions, and the community, the task force aims to provide high-quality healthcare services to the citizens of West Bengal. The task force is also empowered to address any urgent issues requiring immediate attention, reflecting its flexible mandate.

The State Level Task Force is expected to convene at least once a month, allowing for regular assessment of progress and adaptation of strategies as needed. The Chairperson has the authority to co-opt or invite additional members to participate in discussions when necessary, ensuring that the task force remains responsive to the evolving needs of the healthcare system.
