Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
A junior doctor from Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi tragically died after falling from the third floor of Hostel No. 4, along with his girlfriend, on the night of October 21. The deceased, Dr. Akash Bhengra, was a second-year postgraduate student in the Orthopedics Department, while his girlfriend, identified as Pallavi, sustained severe shoulder injuries. Pallavi is not a RIMS student and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital's Trauma Center.
The incident occurred at around 1:30 a.m., after an argument reportedly erupted between the two on the hostel's terrace. Moments later, they both fell from the third floor. Security personnel responded to the sound of the fall and immediately rushed them to the hospital. Akash was in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, while Pallavi, though severely injured, has been declared out of danger following an MRI scan.
The Baraittu police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. According to preliminary findings, the couple had been in a relationship for a significant amount of time, and police are considering the possibility that it was a suicide attempt due to the argument. However, the police are also exploring the possibility of an accidental fall. They are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hostel to determine what exactly transpired.
One of the key aspects of the investigation is how Pallavi gained entry into the boys' hostel late at night, as she was not a student there. The police are questioning hostel authorities and other residents for further insights. Bariatu police station in-charge Manoj Kumar confirmed that they are looking at both suicide and accidental fall angles in the case. This incident has caused widespread concern among junior doctors at RIMS, with many flocking to the Trauma Center to offer support and seek information. RIMS authorities have confirmed that further clarity on the circumstances will emerge once Pallavi’s condition improves, and her statement is recorded.
