Cyclone Dana to hit Bengal-Odisha coast by October 24, heavy rain and storm warnings issued

A storm warning has been issued for the Bengal-Odisha coast as Cyclone Dana is set to hit the region around October 24. The Meteorological Department in New Delhi confirmed that a depression will form in the Bay of Bengal within 24 hours, which will intensify into a cyclone by October 23. Cyclone Dana, named by Qatar meaning "freedom," is expected to make landfall along the Bengal-Odisha coast, though the exact location is still uncertain.

Heavy rain and severe weather warnings have been issued for South Bengal from October 23 to 26. Districts likely to be most affected include East and West Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and Kolkata. Coastal regions will experience rough seas, strong winds, and tidal surges, with some areas potentially seeing wind speeds exceeding 80 km/h. Inland regions may also face flooding and waterlogging due to the heavy downpours. The Meteorological Department has also warned of possible storm surges in low-lying areas along the coastline, which could exacerbate flooding.

Fishermen have been banned from venturing into the deep sea from October 22 onwards, and those already at sea are urged to return to shore immediately. The Indian Coast Guard has been deployed to ensure compliance and assist with any emergency rescues. Residents in coastal areas are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure their homes in preparation for the cyclone’s arrival. Authorities are also urging the public to stock up on essential supplies, as power outages and disruptions to basic services like water supply are expected.

Cyclone Dana’s timing has raised concerns as it coincides with the Kali Puja festivities. Several local celebrations could be disrupted due to the adverse weather, and authorities are considering scaling back public gatherings to ensure safety. Disaster management teams in Bengal and Odisha have been mobilized to respond quickly to any emergencies. Relief camps are being set up in vulnerable areas, and evacuation plans are in place for communities at risk of flooding.

The October-November period has seen an increase in cyclone activity in recent years, with Dana being the latest in a series of storms impacting the Bay of Bengal. Experts attribute this trend to changing climate patterns, which are leading to more frequent and intense storms in the region. As Dana approaches, the next 48 hours will be critical for monitoring its development and exact trajectory. The Meteorological Department is providing regular updates, and citizens are advised to stay tuned to official communications for the latest information.
