Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has warned the remaining Indian diplomats in the country, stating they are “on notice” following the expulsion of six Indian diplomats. This move follows allegations linking Indian officials to the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2022.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) alleges that information about Sikh activists was passed from Indian diplomats to Indian authorities, leading to Nijjar’s assassination. Canada claims these actions violate international law. In response, India has denied the accusations and expelled six Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner in New Delhi, calling the allegations “absurd.”
India has long expressed concerns about the activities of Khalistani separatists in Canada, citing 26 pending extradition requests for individuals facing terrorism-related charges in India. Canada’s approach to these individuals has been a point of contention between the two nations.
Tensions between India and Canada have escalated since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement, suggesting potential Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing. Both countries have expelled diplomats, and relations remain strained as each side maintains its position.
