Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, has filed a plea in the Calcutta High Court to withdraw funds from his fixed deposits (FDs) at a nationalized bank. Ghosh, currently in custody, seeks this withdrawal to financially support his family and cover legal fees. However, the court has denied his request for an urgent hearing, exacerbating his financial difficulties.
Ghosh's case is set to be reviewed by Justice Bivas Pattanayak. Although jail authorities are willing to assist with signing the necessary documents, the bank requires proper authentication of his signature before processing the withdrawal. The court’s refusal to expedite his case means Ghosh remains unable to access these critical funds.
His legal troubles began after the CBI arrested him due to financial irregularities linked to the college, which gained national attention following the rape and murder of a junior doctor. Ghosh faces additional charges of misleading investigators and tampering with evidence during the initial police inquiry.
Moreover, Ghosh is under investigation for multiple serious allegations, including trafficking hospital waste and body trafficking. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has raided his properties, uncovering significant assets, including several real estate holdings and vehicles. Despite this apparent wealth, reports indicate that Ghosh's family is struggling financially, revealing the paradox of his situation.
