Junior doctors launch mass signature campaign in Dharmatala for key demands amid 13-day hunger strike

Junior doctors in Kolkata’s Dharmatala have launched a “mass signature collection” campaign. This initiative is part of their ongoing protest, which has now entered its 13th day, and aims to raise awareness about their 10 key demands. The campaign kicked off on Thursday at noon from the protest stage, where the public can show their support by signing a petition.

The decision to implement this campaign followed a crucial meeting among junior doctors at Kolkata Medical College on Wednesday night. During this meeting, doctors discussed strategies to inform the public about their plight and to build solidarity within the community. Many doctors involved in the hunger strike have reported deteriorating health, and some have experienced severe fatigue and weakness due to the extended fast. In a parallel effort, a junior doctor at North Bengal Medical College is also on a hunger strike, marking the 11th day of protest in Siliguri.

Arif Ahmed Laskar, a prominent leader in the protest, emphasized the importance of engaging with the public. He stated that while Dharmatala attracts many visitors, few take the time to speak with the protesters directly. The mass signature campaign allows citizens to express their support and opinions in a more approachable manner. Signatures are being collected at four strategically chosen locations within Dharmatala, ensuring that accessibility is maximized for those willing to participate.

This campaign is not confined to Dharmatala alone; it has also gained traction in various districts, where junior doctors have begun similar signature collection efforts. Medical professionals from other colleges have committed to joining the campaign, amplifying the movement’s reach.

To maintain momentum and strategize for the future, daily meetings are being organized to discuss the direction of the movement. These gatherings will help solidify plans and keep the protest organized and focused. Additionally, on October 19, a “Night Occupation” event is scheduled at the 8B Bus Stand in Jadavpur, running from 8 PM to 8 AM.
