A fire broke out in an abandoned factory on Canal West Road in Beleghata on Thursday morning, causing significant concern as three chemical tankers caught fire. Despite the swift arrival of five fire engines, the flames had not yet been brought under control at the time of reporting.
The fire was first noticed around 10:30 a.m. when locals saw thick black smoke rising from the factory, which had been shut down for six years. Upon closer inspection, they realized that some of the chemical tankers stored in the factory premises were ablaze. The fire department was quickly alerted, and five fire engines arrived to tackle the blaze.
Due to the intensity of the fire and the presence of oil, the firemen have faced significant challenges in bringing the situation under control. Firefighters have resorted to using foam to contain the fire, as regular water is less effective against oil-based fires.
Thankfully, there have been no reported casualties since the factory has been abandoned for several years. However, the factory is located near a densely populated area, and residents expressed concerns about the potential danger if the fire were to spread to nearby homes. "Had the fire reached the residential areas, a major disaster could have occurred," said a resident.
Initial reports suggest that chemicals stored in the factory might have contributed to the fire. Firefighters are working diligently to prevent the blaze from spreading to surrounding areas. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire to ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future.
