Kolkata Police have arrested five individuals in connection with a violent attack on Sourav Modak, a relative of a patient, at SSKM Hospital. The assault occurred on Sunday morning around 8 a.m. in the trauma care department when a mob of 15-20 assailants entered the facility and began attacking Modak with hockey sticks. He sustained serious injuries, including multiple fractures to his skull, arms, and legs, and is currently in critical condition at the hospital.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Arman Barua (18), Jit Ghosh (18), Abhijit Ghosh (19), Niyaz Ahmed (28), and Shahnawaz Ali Khan (24). All five are residents of the Chetla and Alipore neighborhoods. Eyewitnesses reported that Modak was attacked without any provocation while he waited outside the Trauma Care Center. Following the incident, he was immediately admitted to the same hospital for emergency treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Modak may have been involved in a gang conflict earlier in the day, which possibly led to the violent confrontation at the hospital. Sources indicate that members of one gang had come to SSKM for treatment when members of a rival faction arrived and initiated the attack.
In response to the attack, the police are conducting a thorough review of CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas to identify additional suspects involved in the incident. The police have also seized four motorcycles believed to belong to the assailants. Despite the arrests made, several attackers remain at large, and police are actively working to locate them.
