Jr Doctors march to Raj Bhavan, demand proper CBI probe into RG Kar case

On Monday afternoon, junior doctors in Kolkata organized a significant rally to Raj Bhavan, advocating for a comprehensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the recent murder of a fellow medic, who was tragically raped and killed. The march began at Dharmatala, where barricades were installed to control the substantial turnout, reflecting the growing intensity of the protest. This rally came just days after the conclusion of Durga Puja, marking a renewed push for justice in the healthcare community.

The procession, dubbed the "Raj Bhavan Abhiyan," attracted individuals from various backgrounds, ages, and professions. The sight of an elderly woman in a wheelchair marching ahead, holding a banner demanding justice, symbolized the widespread community support for the doctors' cause. Doctors led the way, flanked by numerous ordinary citizens and civil society members who united to voice their concerns over safety in the healthcare sector.

As the march progressed, tensions arose between the junior doctors and the police regarding the procession's route. Initially, police suggested an alternative narrow road, raising safety concerns among the doctors about the risk of being trampled. The doctors insisted on proceeding straight to Raj Bhavan via Bentinck Street, leading to negotiations with police officials to ensure the march could continue without chaos.

The atmosphere was charged with emotion as participants expressed their distrust in the CBI's investigation process. Debashis Halder, a prominent junior doctor, emphasized the urgent need for transparency and accountability, stating, "We are not just marching for our colleague; we are demanding a complete overhaul of the system that failed her." This statement encapsulated the sentiments shared by many, as they sought not only justice for their murdered colleague but also systemic reforms to enhance safety within medical institutions.

Prominent figures from the entertainment industry also joined the cause, with actress Devleena Dutt voicing her support for the doctors' demands. Holding the national flag, participants reiterated the call for justice, symbolizing unity across various sectors of society.
