Following his defeat in the Haryana Assembly elections, former MLA Balraj Kundu has announced the discontinuation of the free bus service he initiated for female students in the Meham constituency. Kundu, who leads the Haryana Jansevak Party (HJP), indicated that the responsibility for this service should now fall to the newly elected Congress MLA, Balram Dangi. This decision stems from Kundu's disappointment with voters, who he believes did not adequately support his social initiatives during the election.
Kundu began the bus service in 2017 with eight buses, gradually expanding to a total of 18. The buses transported girls from approximately 40 villages to various educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities. Local residents, including Madan Lal, highlighted the importance of this service, stating that it relieved financial burdens on families and ensured the safety of girls commuting to their studies. Each bus reportedly covered over 100 kilometers daily, reaching remote areas to facilitate education for young women.
After the election results, Kundu expressed his hurt and frustration during a meeting with party workers, revealing that many of his supporters were upset about the lack of electoral rewards for his social contributions. "I did not choose social service for political gains," he said, reflecting on his disappointment with the voters’ reaction.
In light of Kundu's decision to terminate the service, Balram Dangi, the newly elected Congress candidate, assured the community that he would work to restore the bus service. He challenged Kundu's assertion of non-political motives, stating that if Kundu truly did not seek political gain, he would not have ceased the service immediately after his loss. Dangi communicated with the general manager of Haryana Roadways, who expressed willingness to consider resuming the service for the students who now lack transportation.
