Maharashtra govt proposes Bharat Ratna for late Ratan Tata after his passing

The Maharashtra Cabinet has officially proposed Ratan Tata's name for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to Indian industry, philanthropy, and social causes. This significant proposal comes in the wake of Tata's passing on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86. The Cabinet emphasized that Tata’s legacy warrants this prestigious honor, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he garnered throughout his life.

Ratan Tata, who served as the chairman of Tata Sons from 1991 to 2012, transformed the Tata Group into one of the world's largest and most influential conglomerates. His leadership saw pivotal acquisitions, including the British steelmaker Corus and luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover, enhancing India's global business presence. The Cabinet's proposal highlights Tata's commitment to ethical business practices and his dedication to social responsibility, which are hallmarks of his tenure.

The Bharat Ratna is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions in various fields, including arts, literature, science, and public service. The Maharashtra Cabinet believes that Tata’s transformative impact on the Indian economy and his philanthropic efforts make him a deserving candidate for this honor. His initiatives through Tata Trusts have significantly advanced education, healthcare, and rural development in India, aligning with the values the Bharat Ratna embodies.

Currently, Tata’s body lies in state at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai, allowing the public to pay their respects. His last rites will be conducted today at 4 PM with full state honors. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde lauded Tata's leadership during critical periods, including the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, reinforcing the importance of recognizing his contributions to the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent leaders have expressed their condolences, echoing the sentiments of the Maharashtra Cabinet regarding Tata's remarkable legacy.
