BSP chief Mayawati has blamed the Jat community's "casteist mentality" for her party's dismal performance in the Haryana assembly elections. In a post on X, she stated that the Jat voters in Haryana failed to support the BSP, contrasting them with their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh, who have increasingly backed the party and its candidates.
The BSP, which formed an alliance with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) for the elections, managed to win only 2 out of 90 seats, securing a mere 1.82% of the vote share. In contrast, the BJP achieved a remarkable victory, winning 48 seats, marking its third consecutive term in the state. The Congress party followed with 37 seats, while independent candidates outperformed the BSP-INLD alliance by winning three seats.
Mayawati emphasized that several BSP candidates lost by narrow margins due to the lack of support from the Jat community. She urged the Jat voters of Haryana to change their mindset, noting that those in Uttar Pradesh have successfully become BSP MLAs and ministers, reflecting a shift away from casteist attitudes.
In her message, Mayawati expressed gratitude to BSP members for their efforts during the campaign and encouraged them not to lose hope. She asserted that a new path will emerge for the party and its supporters, stressing the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of electoral setbacks.
