Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has intensified his critique of the Congress party, accusing it of treating Muslims as a mere vote bank while simultaneously fostering divisions among Hindus. In an interview with IANS, Rijiju claimed that Congress's political strategies are detrimental to both communities. He emphasized, "My warning to the Muslims: Do not become a vote bank of the Congress! My warning to Hindus & others: Do not become the victims of divide & rule policies of the Congress Party."
Rijiju further alleged that the Congress party has historically exploited the Muslim community for electoral gains, suggesting that their reliance on a 15% vote share from Muslims reflects a damaging mindset. He argued that this approach not only fails to address the genuine issues faced by the Muslim community but also stunts its development. Additionally, Rijiju criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asserting that he lacks an understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized groups, including Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
The minister also expressed concerns over Congress's long-standing neglect of the contributions of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Rijiju alleged that the party has historically sought to diminish Ambedkar’s legacy while undermining constitutional values, particularly during the 1975 Emergency. He stated, "It is disheartening to see Congress members, who once disrespected Baba Saheb and the Constitution, now hypocritically hold the Constitution in their hands."
Rijiju contrasted the Congress party’s approach with that of Prime Minister Modi's government, which he claims has worked to uplift both Muslims and Hindus through various initiatives aimed at ensuring social justice and equality. He highlighted that under PM Modi's leadership, the government has implemented programs to provide banking services, housing, and essential utilities to all Indians, including the Muslim community.
Rahul Gandhi had recently criticized the BJP government for its perceived inaction regarding violence against minorities, particularly Muslims. He referred to recent incidents of mob violence against Muslims in BJP-ruled states, indicating a narrative of fear and communal tensions exacerbated by political rivalries.
