Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, arrived in New Delhi on Sunday, marking the beginning of a crucial state visit focused on enhancing diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. Touching down at the Air Force Station Palam around 4:30 PM, Muizzu's visit comes at a pivotal time as both nations seek to navigate their foreign policies amid regional influences, particularly from China. The visit symbolizes a thaw in previously strained ties, with discussions planned to address economic cooperation and maritime security.
During his stay, President Muizzu is scheduled to meet with key Indian leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These high-level discussions are expected to cover a range of topics, including trade, security, and the ongoing balancing act in foreign policy that both nations are undertaking. Muizzu’s rise to power in 2023 was characterized by an "India Out" campaign, advocating for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives. However, he has since dialed down the rhetoric, emphasizing concerns about foreign military presence rather than singling out any particular nation.
Signs of improvement in relations have emerged in recent months, highlighted by reciprocal visits from foreign ministers of both nations. In May, Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer visited India, and in August, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a trip to the Maldives. Furthermore, India's financial support in the form of a $50 million extension of treasury bills has helped the Maldives avoid a potential default on its Islamic bond payments, demonstrating India's commitment to supporting its maritime neighbor.
To further mend relations, Muizzu has taken actions against members of his government who made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Modi, indicating a shift in his administration's stance. The state visit includes various ceremonial events and meetings, starting with a call from Jaishankar at Hotel ITC Maurya, where Muizzu is staying. The ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan and a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat are also significant highlights of the visit. Additionally, Muizzu's itinerary includes trips to Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he will engage with the business community and the Maldivian diaspora.
