SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
10 doctors from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been permanently expelled following an internal investigation into allegations of fostering a culture of threats, money laundering, and ragging. The college council, after thorough deliberation, decided to take this step. Accused of creating an atmosphere of fear and harassment within the hospital, the doctors were immediately served expulsion notices, which were also sent to their homes. This move comes after several complaints surfaced, raising alarms about misconduct and abuse of power within the institution.
The investigation revealed a systematic pattern of harassment, with students reporting both physical and mental abuse. Among the accusations were claims of forced participation in political activities, including coercion into joining a particular political party and punishment for refusing to attend marches or meetings. More disturbingly, the expelled doctors allegedly forced juniors to run errands, including buying alcohol and drugs late at night, and subjected them to humiliation in the common rooms. Complaints of academic sabotage also emerged, with some students threatened with expulsion for non-compliance with these illegal demands.
Further action has been taken against 59 individuals, including interns, students, and house staff, who have been temporarily suspended as part of the investigation. Their names have been forwarded to the State Medical Council, with recommendations for a review of their medical registration certificates, raising the possibility of their licenses being canceled. The expelled doctors have also been given a strict 72-hour deadline to vacate their hostel accommodations. The expelled doctors are reportedly linked to the former hospital principal, Sandeep Ghosh, who is currently under investigation for his involvement in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor on the RG Kar premises on August 9. Ghosh is also facing charges of financial irregularities during his tenure at the hospital.
