Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
On Sunday morning, a police encounter unfolded in Lakhimpur as officers intercepted criminals transporting banned meat in a car from Khamaria to Bahraich. During this confrontation, one of the criminals, identified as Gul Sher, was shot in the leg. The police successfully arrested two individuals at the scene, seizing approximately two quintals of banned meat and various tools associated with illegal meat processing. However, three other criminals managed to escape, abandoning their meat-laden vehicle.
In recent weeks, Bareilly district has experienced a troubling surge in incidents involving the theft and slaughter of banned animals, creating a climate of fear and unrest among local residents. The situation escalated further on the same Sunday morning when a similar incident was reported in the Neemgaon police station area. Criminals had filled their car with meat and attempted to flee towards Bahraich, prompting local authorities to take immediate action.
Acting on a tip-off received by Assistant Superintendent of Police Pawan Gautam, officers launched an investigation and quickly devised a plan to intercept the suspects. When police set up a blockade on the highway, the criminals attempted to evade capture by turning onto the Rehua-Saraswa road. As the police cornered them near a sugarcane field, Gul Sher exited the vehicle and fired at the officers while trying to hide in the field. In a swift and necessary response, police returned fire, striking him in the leg, which led to his apprehension. His accomplice, Vakeel Ahmed, was also taken into custody from the vehicle.
Following the encounter, law enforcement officials transported the injured Gul Sher to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The police collected samples of the seized goods for forensic analysis and further investigation. The arrested individuals are scheduled to be presented in court, where they will face charges related to the illegal transport of banned meat. Authorities emphasized that this operation marks a significant step in their efforts to curb the illegal meat trade and protect local wildlife. Ongoing investigations aim to identify and apprehend the remaining accomplices involved in this criminal activity, reinforcing the police's commitment to restoring law and order in the region.
