India women suffer heavy 58-run defeat to New Zealand in t20 world cup opener

India suffered a 58-run defeat against New Zealand in their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Dubai. Chasing a target of 161, India struggled from the outset and were bowled out for 102 in 19 overs. The defeat marked a disastrous start to their campaign, leaving them in a tough spot in a competitive group.

New Zealand, led by Sophie Devine, put on a competitive 160/4 in their innings. Devine anchored the innings with an unbeaten 57 off 36 balls, with solid support from Brooke Halliday. Despite decent bowling performances from Asha Sobhana and Arundhati Reddy, India’s fielding lapses and Deepti Sharma’s expensive spell hurt their chances. A controversial run-out decision in favor of New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr also added to India’s frustrations during the game.

India’s chase got off to a poor start, with both Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana dismissed early. Rosemary Mair's impressive 4/19 further derailed India’s hopes as the team crumbled under pressure. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s 15 was the highest score for India in a dismal batting display.

Despite the loss, India will need to regroup quickly as they face tough opponents ahead in the tournament. Their net run rate also took a hit due to the significant margin of defeat, making future games even more crucial.
