India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to visit Pakistan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting, scheduled for October 15-16 in Islamabad. Pakistan, currently holding the rotating chairmanship of the SCO Council, will host this two-day in-person summit. India had confirmed its receipt of the invitation on August 30.
The Islamabad summit will include a ministerial meeting and several rounds of discussions among senior officials on key areas like financial, economic, socio-cultural, and humanitarian cooperation between the SCO member states. Founded in 2001, the SCO has become one of the largest international organizations, focusing on economic and security cooperation.
India and Pakistan both became permanent members of the SCO in 2017, with Iran joining as a permanent member last year at the India-hosted virtual summit. India's hosting of the SCO Summit last year saw Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attending virtually.
