Potato traders to go on strike if Bengal doesn’t allow selling to other states
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized the importance of festivals in the state’s cultural fabric, following calls from some protestors to boycott the Durga Puja festival in response to the RG Kar rape-murder case. Addressing the concerns, Mamata Banerjee stated that West Bengal has a tradition of celebrating various festivals year-round, promoting inclusivity and unity.
Speaking at the inauguration of the puja edition of TMC's mouthpiece, 'Jago Bangla' (Wake Up, Bengal), Banerjee remarked, "Many people are questioning why we are indulging in festivities. They should understand that West Bengal's culture is rich with celebrations. We believe in taking everyone along during these festivities."
Her comments were aimed at dispelling notions that celebrations were inappropriate given the recent events. The Chief Minister’s remarks came in light of junior doctors resuming their 'total cease work' ahead of Durga Puja, which coincided with calls for justice in the RG Kar case.
CM Banerjee, however, maintained that Durga Puja holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Bengal, marking the beginning of the festive season. "People eagerly look forward to Durga Puja all year long. After Durga Puja, we have Diwali, Kali Puja, Chhath Puja, and the festive season continues until Christmas," she added.
