India is set to host the first-ever Kho-Kho World Cup in 2025, a historic event organized by the Kho-Kho Federation of India (KKFI) in collaboration with the International Kho-Kho Federation. A total of 24 countries from six continents will participate, with 16 male and 16 female teams competing in this prestigious tournament. This marks a significant step in the global recognition of Kho-Kho, a traditional Indian sport with deep cultural roots.
Kho-Kho, which originated on clay grounds in India, has now transitioned to mats and gained an international presence. The game is played in 54 countries around the world, and this World Cup will further showcase its competitive nature and cultural heritage. To promote the sport ahead of the tournament, KKFI plans to introduce Kho-Kho to 200 elite schools across 10 cities in India. They also aim to register at least 50 lakh school students as players through a membership drive, significantly expanding the sport's reach.
KKFI President Shasudhanshu Mittal expressed excitement about the event, stating, "We are very excited to host the first-ever Kho-Kho World Cup. This tournament will not only showcase competition but also promote cultural exchange, uniting countries and highlighting the beauty of Kho-Kho. Our ultimate goal is to see Kho-Kho recognized as an Olympic sport by 2032, and this World Cup is the first step towards that dream."
The Kho-Kho World Cup will be a week-long event, featuring top-level athletes from around the globe who will demonstrate their agility, skills, and teamwork. The tournament will elevate Kho-Kho to the international stage, helping to secure its future as an Olympic sport by 2032, marking a major milestone in the history of the game.
