On Saturday night, a passenger bus rammed into a stationary truck on National Highway 30 in Maihar district, Madhya Pradesh, killing nine people, including a 4-year-old child. The bus, carrying 45 passengers, was en route from Prayagraj to Nagpur via Rewa when it collided with a stone-laden truck parked near an eatery around 11:30 pm.
The impact was devastating, with the front of the bus severely damaged. Emergency rescue teams used gas cutters and excavators to reach the trapped passengers. Six people were initially reported dead at the scene, but the death toll rose to nine as three more succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Twenty other passengers sustained injuries, with six in critical condition. The injured were first taken to hospitals in Maihar and Amarpatan, with eight later referred to Satna district hospital for further treatment. The rescue operation concluded around 2 am on Sunday, according to Superintendent of Police Sudhir Agrawal.
Preliminary investigations suggest the bus was speeding at the time of the accident. Authorities are continuing their probe to determine the exact cause of the collision.
