Malda follows Tripura’s lead, bans Bangladeshis from hotels amid growing border tensions
On the evening of 24th September, at approximately 7:15 pm, officers from Watgunge Police Station received a tip-off regarding the illegal transportation of banned fireworks in the Garden Reach area. Acting on this information, the police set up a surprise vehicle checkpoint at the crossing of Garden Reach Road and Kabitirtha Sarani.
Around 8:15 pm, a suspicious goods vehicle bearing the registration number WB-19K-7667 was observed coming from Karbala Park along Garden Reach Road. The police intercepted the vehicle at the crossing. Upon interrogation, the driver, identified as Sk. Samirul, aged 29, failed to provide any satisfactory explanation or valid documents for the fireworks in his possession.
During a search of the vehicle, the police recovered a large quantity of different types of banned fireworks, weighing approximately 48.2 kilograms. The fireworks were seized, along with the goods vehicle, under the necessary legal procedures. It was revealed that the accused was planning to sell these fireworks to various individuals ahead of the upcoming festival season.
Following the seizure, a case was registered under Watgunge Police Station (Case No. 192) dated 24.09.2024 under Section 9B(1)(b) of the Explosives Act, read with Section 61(2) of the BNS 2023. The driver, Sk. Samirul was arrested on the same night at approximately 10:20 pm, and investigations are ongoing to uncover further links related to the illegal fireworks trade.
