The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a new low-pressure area forming in the central-western Bay of Bengal, likely influenced by an ongoing cyclone in the central region. This development is set to bring significant weather changes to southern West Bengal, particularly starting Wednesday.
Residents can expect scattered rain accompanied by thunderstorms due to both the cyclone and the newly forming depression. On Tuesday, light to moderate rainfall is predicted across most districts, with the exception of Nadia, Murshidabad, Purulia, and East Burdwan. However, conditions are expected to worsen, with rainfall intensifying on Wednesday and Thursday, especially in West Burdwan, West Midnapore, Birbhum, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore.
In the remaining southern West Bengal districts, moderate rain with thunderstorms is anticipated. Furthermore, winds may reach speeds of up to 30 kilometers per hour in South 24 Parganas and the Medinipur districts during this period.
This weather change comes on the heels of heavy rains two weeks ago, which had already caused significant damage in southern West Bengal, leading to the submergence of numerous villages. As the region grapples with the aftermath of those conditions, the IMD has also warned of heavy rainfall in northern districts, including Malda, North Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, especially on Friday.
Kolkata is expected to see cloudy skies and light to moderate rain throughout Tuesday, with maximum temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius and minimums around 28 degrees Celsius. The IMD has noted the presence of two cyclones in the western-central Bay of Bengal and along the southern Myanmar coast, along with active monsoon conditions in various regions of South Bengal.
