Amid tensions between the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and the West Bengal government, the DVC has released a significant amount of water from the Panchet and Maithon reservoirs. On Monday, DVC officials reported that 30,000 cusecs of water were being released from the Maithon reservoir and 12,000 cusecs from the Panchet reservoir.
This follows the release of 30,000 cusecs and 20,000 cusecs from the two reservoirs on Sunday morning. A total of 42,000 cusecs of water released from Panchet and Maithon has reached Durgapur reservoir, which has subsequently released 49,050 cusecs of water.
This additional water is expected to flow towards the districts of East Bardhaman, Howrah, and Hooghly along the Damodar River. With several villages in Howrah, Hooghly, East Medinipur, Birbhum, and East Bardhaman are already submerged due to recent floods.
The release of more water has raised concerns about potential flooding in these low-lying areas. However, DVC has indicated that it is gradually reducing the water release as the rains in Jharkhand have ceased.
