A veteran hairdresser in the Bengali film industry attempted suicide after alleging harassment from the Hairdresser Guild. In a distressing note written on September 21, she named 11 guild members as responsible for her plight. A complaint has been lodged at Haridevpur police station.
Rescued by her daughter, the hairdresser was taken to MR Bangur Hospital after she reportedly poured kerosene oil on herself. She had been suspended for three months starting May 1, though the reasons for her suspension remain unclear. According to sources, she had been advocating for fair elections within the Guild, which led to her becoming a target for harassment.
The hairdresser expressed in her note that her suspension hindered her ability to fulfill family responsibilities, stating, "I am forced to commit suicide. Committee members of my guild are responsible for this." She also attempted to seek assistance from Swarup Biswas, a TMC leader and president of the Federation of Cine Technicians’ Workers of Eastern India, but did not receive help.
Despite managing to secure work on a film, she was abruptly removed from the project, which reportedly triggered her suicide attempt. The police are currently investigating the allegations and have forwarded the case to the Regent Park police station due to jurisdiction.
Bengali actor Sudipta Chakraborty expressed her outrage over the incident, sharing it on social media and emphasizing the severity of workplace harassment.
