A tragic methane gas explosion at a coal mine in Iran's South Khorasan Province claimed at least 51 lives and injured 20 more, according to state media. The blast occurred around 9 p.m. local time on Saturday, affecting two blocks of the mine operated by the Madanjoo company. At the time, approximately 70 workers were on site, with many believed to be trapped inside.
Rescue operations have seen some success, with the team completing efforts in block B. Of the 47 workers present in that block, 30 tragically lost their lives while 17 were injured. Rescue efforts continue in block C, where high methane levels pose significant challenges. Governor Ali Akbar Rahimi noted that this region produces 76% of Iran's coal, housing several large mining companies.
President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. He assured that all necessary support would be provided for rescue operations and assistance to affected families, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in the mining sector.
