Vishwakarma Puja was celebrated with much fervor across Bengal on Tuesday, but an unfortunate incident unfolded at Shibpur Ghat during the immersion of the deity’s idol. A lorry carrying the idol sank into the Ganga, causing panic among the workers who were involved in the ritual.
The mishap occurred in the afternoon around 3 PM when 22 workers from a factory in the Jalan Complex, Domjur, brought the idol to the ghat.
As per police sources, the lorry was parked near the ghat with its rear wheel blocked by a piece of wood. The water level of the Ganga was high due to the tide at the time. While unloading the idol, the lorry unexpectedly rolled backward and plunged into the river, taking the idol with it. Fortunately, no workers were injured, as they managed to jump off the lorry in time.
Shibpur police immediately rushed to the scene and launched an investigation into how the accident occurred. Efforts are underway to recover the lorry from the Ganga, and authorities are assessing the situation.
