Police rescue two kidnapped people in Basirhat

In Basirhat, West Bengal, two individuals were kidnapped, and a ransom of Rs 5 lakh was demanded for their release. Acting on a written complaint, the police conducted a raid on a house in Basirhat on Wednesday and successfully rescued the kidnapped individuals. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The victims, Mohammad Rafi, a teacher and businessman from Haltu, and his employee, Sajid, were lured to Basirhat on September 14 after receiving a phone call. Upon arrival at the designated location, both were held hostage by the kidnappers. The kidnappers then called Rafi's wife, Tabassum, demanding Rs 5 lakh for their release. Out of fear, the family initially paid Rs 80,000, followed by an additional Rs 3 lakh.

After the ransom was partially paid, Tabassum filed a complaint at the Karaya police station. A joint investigation by the Karaya police and the anti-rowdy squad branch of Lalbazar led to the tracking of the kidnappers' location using mobile tower data. The police raided a house in Basirhat, successfully rescuing both Rafi and Sajid.

Initial investigations revealed that the kidnappers were agents previously associated with Rafi’s trading company. Their motive for the kidnapping was to recover money they had invested but not received back. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are being questioned.
