Team India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has praised Virat Kohli as the best Test captain the country has ever had. In a special video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir and Kohli engaged in an insightful discussion about Kohli's tenure as Test captain, shedding light on his leadership journey and achievements.
Gambhir commended Kohli for building a formidable fast-bowling unit, essential for Test success. He remarked, "I can understand what you must have gone through, a 25-year-old boy. Taking up India's Test captaincy. What you did brilliantly was that you had built a really-really strong bowling unit. And Test matches are won by taking 20 wickets."
Kohli's tenure as India's Test captain was remarkable. Under his leadership, India achieved 40 wins in 68 matches, with a win percentage of 58.82. Kohli's era saw India rise to the top of the ICC Test rankings, a position they held for a record 42 months. His captaincy also led India to their first-ever Test series win in Australia during the 2018-19 tour, marking a historic achievement for Indian cricket.
Gambhir highlighted Kohli's emphasis on fast bowling, which contributed to one of the most formidable pace attacks globally. He recalled Kohli's notable performance in Adelaide during his first Test as captain, showcasing his determination to win.
The current Test team under Gambhir’s coaching aims to emulate the mindset and culture Kohli instilled, emphasizing the importance of red-ball cricket and building a team with strong character and competitiveness.
