The Supreme Court, during a hearing on the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, expressed its concern over the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) ongoing probe. The Chief Justice stated that the court is "very disturbed" by the findings in the case and emphasized the need to allow the CBI to continue its investigation without rushing the filing of a chargesheet due to the case's sensitive nature.
A lawyer representing the victim's side pointed out significant discrepancies in the collection and seizure of forensic evidence, particularly regarding samples from the crime scene. The court was informed that only 27 minutes of the crucial CCTV footage from the crime scene had been provided to the CBI by Kolkata Police. Furthermore, the lawyer suggested the possibility that a 'blocker device' may have been used to interfere with the hash value of the footage, thereby raising concerns about tampering.
The footage reportedly shows only one side of the entrance to the seminar room where the crime allegedly occurred, leaving questions about whether people could have exited through the other side. The court highlighted the importance of thoroughly investigating all leads and addressing these discrepancies before proceeding further.
