Amid growing unrest in West Bengal over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien has raised concerns about the delay in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. O'Brien questioned why the CBI has yet to file a charge sheet in the case, despite the Supreme Court monitoring the investigation and the accused being in custody. "How long will the RG Kar victim’s family have to wait for justice? The CBI has the accused and all the evidence. Why is it not filing a charge sheet and starting the trial?" he asked.
The MP stressed the importance of swift justice, echoing the frustrations felt by many, including junior doctors who have been protesting for nearly a month. O’Brien highlighted the urgency of starting the trial to ensure justice for the victim. "We all want swift justice. Why is the CBI delaying the trial? We need answers," he expressed through a post on social media platform X.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has been attempting to negotiate with the protesting junior doctors, who have refused to return to work until justice is served. In a bold statement, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was willing to resign in the interest of the people if it would help resolve the crisis. Her resignation offer came after junior doctors rejected her call for a meeting, citing disagreements over live-streaming the proceedings.
The RG Kar case has become a rallying point for many in the state, with protests and demands for justice intensifying. The CBI took over the investigation after the brutal rape and murder of the 31-year-old junior doctor, whose body was found at the hospital’s seminar hall. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested a day later and remains the prime accused in the case.
