The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has called on former chief minister Champai Soren to urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a separate census for Sarna faith practitioners during his visit to Jamshedpur on Sunday. JMM spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya stated that Soren, now with the BJP, should ensure the issue is addressed during the national census next year.
“When Champai da was our party leader and chief minister, he highlighted the need for the Sarna Code in all his public meetings. Now that he is in the BJP, it is only befitting that he gets the PM to talk about the issue and get an assurance from him that the census will happen for Sarna believers along with a caste census next year,” Bhattacharya said.
Champai, former JMM vice-president, quit the party and formally joined the BJP on August 30 at a formal ceremony in Ranchi.
