Junior doctors have continued their protest outside Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the health department in Bidhannagar, Salt Lake, demanding justice for their colleague, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
The protest, which started on Tuesday morning, has carried on through the night, as the doctors refuse to relent until their demands for a clean-up of the state’s health administration are met.
Despite efforts from the state government to negotiate, the doctors have stood firm in their stance. On Wednesday, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul visited the protest site but was met with chants of "go back" from the crowd. She later claimed she was only passing through to visit the nearby BJP office.
The protest has garnered widespread local support, with residents and nearby shopkeepers offering food and essentials to the doctors. Citizens from various localities have also joined the protest, standing in solidarity with the junior doctors.
