SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
A junior resident doctor from the Oncology Department at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, Jharkhand, was molested in a hospital lift on her way to work on Sunday. The accused was arrested after an FIR was registered.
Following the incident, the doctors announced a pen-down strike. However, after discussions between the Junior Doctors' Association (JDA) and the RIMS management, the strike was called off when the management assured the doctors of increased security. They agreed to appoint lift operators for every lift and deploy armed police officers in each ward. At least 100 armed police personnel will be stationed on the premises.
This incident comes against the backdrop of the RG Kar Hospital case, where a female trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9, leading to massive protests across the country as doctors took to the streets demanding justice for the victim.
Junior doctors at RIMS had also protested the RG Kar incident, demanding better security and the enforcement of the Medical Protection Act.
