Violence erupts in Kolkata as Hindu Jagran Manch protest clashes with police; Officer injured
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while addressing the Assembly on the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill, 2024, urged Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari to request state Governor CV Ananda Bose to grant his assent to the bill. Her remarks met with sloganeering from the BJP MLAs.
Mamata emphasized that the bill aims to address loopholes in existing central legislation and called rape a "curse against humanity" that requires social reforms to curb. "The opposition should ask the governor to sign the Bill; it is our responsibility to enact it after that. We want justice from the CBI and the death penalty for the guilty," Mamata declared.
Criticizing the BJP, Mamata highlighted crime statistics against women in states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, asserting that West Bengal remains the safest place for women. She even added that in West Bengal, victims get justice.
Referring to the tragic death of a woman doctor on August 9, she recounted how she spoke with the victim's parents, ensuring transparency by providing them with all relevant evidence. She mentioned that the primary suspect was arrested within 12 hours and pushed for the death penalty but lamented that the case was handed over to the CBI.
