The Indian archery duo of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar secured a bronze medal in the mixed team compound event at the Paralympics with a narrow 156-155 victory over Italy's Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina on Monday. This achievement marks India's second-ever medal in Paralympic archery, following Harvinder Singh's individual bronze at the Tokyo Games three years ago.
In addition, Sheetal Devi became the first Indian woman to win an archery medal at the Paralympics. Her success was celebrated by her coach, Kuldeep Vedhwan. Sheetal, now 17 years old, was born in 2007 with phocomelia, a rare congenital condition that led to the underdevelopment of her limbs, preventing her arms from fully forming.
Rakesh Kumar, aged 39, suffered a spinal cord injury in 2009 that left him wheelchair-bound. The injury significantly impacted his mental health, leading to a period of depression. Despite these challenges, both athletes demonstrated remarkable resilience to achieve this historic milestone for India in Paralympic archery.
