India's Nitesh Kumar secured a gold medal in the men's singles badminton (SL3) at the Paris Paralympics 2024, held at Porte de La Chapelle Arena on September 2. Nitesh triumphed over Britain's Daniel Bethell with a scoreline of 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in a thrilling hour and 20-minute match.
This victory marks Nitesh's first Paralympic gold medal. With this win, India's total medal count at the Paris Paralympics has reached nine, including two golds, three silvers, and four bronze medals. The 29-year-old athlete from Haryana showcased an impeccable shot selection to outplay Tokyo silver medallist Bethell.
Nitesh's win helps India retain the SL3 gold in badminton, continuing the legacy after Pramod Bhagat won it at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. The SL3 category in badminton features players with significant lower limb disabilities, requiring them to compete on a half-width court.
