Netflix’s latest series, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, directed by Anubhav Sinha, is facing severe backlash over the portrayal of the 1999 hijack of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814. The controversy stems from the renaming of the hijackers to “Bhola” and “Shankar,” which has sparked accusations of deliberate misrepresentation.
Social media users have called for a boycott of the series, despite casting director Mukesh Chhabra clarifying that these were merely codenames. The situation escalated when BJP's Amit Malviya criticized the series for not using the real names of the hijackers.
In response, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned Netflix content head Monika Shergill. The outcome of this meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, will determine the government's stance on the issue.
The series, featuring stars like Vijay Varma, Pankaj Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Naseeruddin Shah, and Arvind Swamy, remains in the spotlight as the debate over creative freedom versus factual accuracy continues.
