SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
West Bengal is bringing in an anti-rape bill to deliver faster trials and death punishment to the culprits. The sections will be amendments to the Indian Justice Code and Indian Civil Protection Code, specifically focusing on sexual harassment, rape, and gang rape cases. These changes aim to expedite the judicial process and create a safer environment for women and children.
Key amendments include the provision of speedy trials, with serious offenses to be completed within a minimum of seven days, down from the previous requirement of one month. The investigation period has also been reduced, requiring police stations to complete investigations within 21 days, with an optional 15-day extension approved by a District Police Superintendent.
Special courts and dedicated investigative teams will be established, receiving special privileges to ensure swift justice. The amendments enforce stricter punishments, including life imprisonment, fines, and the death penalty for rape, gang rape, and cases resulting in the victim's death or coma. All cases under these amendments will be non-bailable.
