Kolkata metro to be extended till Hooghly's Chuchura? Here's what Railway minister says
West Bengal Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Chandrima Bhattacharya has urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to build a robust case in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident, ensuring that "the rapist is hanged."
Speaking during a protest in Kolkata, Bhattacharya emphasized that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directed the party’s Mahila Morcha to stage demonstrations across the state on September 1.
Bhattacharya also announced that the West Bengal government has called a special session of the Assembly on September 2-3 to propose a bill for capital punishment for rapists. "We are bringing a Bill that will go to the President through the Governor. We believe that the President will sanction it and it will become a law," she stated.
The horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9 have sparked widespread protests, both in West Bengal and nationwide. The case, now under CBI investigation following a Calcutta High Court order, has led to the arrest of Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital.
