President Murmu flags 'delay in justice' in rape cases, highlights lack of sensitivity

President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the urgent need to address the backlog and pendency in the judiciary, particularly in sensitive cases such as rape. Speaking at the valedictory event of the National Conference of the District Judiciary on Sunday, Murmu expressed concern over delays in court decisions, stating that justice must not only be served but also be timely.

Murmu pointed out that in many rural areas, people view the judiciary as "divine," but she questioned how long justice can be delayed before it loses its meaning. "By the time someone gets justice, their smiles might have disappeared, their lives might have ended," she said, stressing the importance of swift resolutions.

The President also called for an end to the "culture of adjournments" in courts, urging the judicial system to take all necessary actions to ensure timely justice. She expressed particular concern over the plight of women, noting that societal support is often lacking for female victims of crime.

The event, attended by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, also included the release of a flag and insignia of the Supreme Court by the President.
