Allu Arjun gets interim bail by high court in Pushpa 2 stampede case
The Kolkata Police on Friday firmly denied allegations made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the alleged tampering of the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered earlier this month.
The controversy erupted after the CBI, during a Supreme Court hearing, accused the Kolkata Police of compromising the crime scene in the hospital's seminar hall, misleading the victim's family by initially suggesting that the doctor's death was a suicide. The central agency also expressed concerns over the delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR) and the handling of the case by the hospital authorities.
In response, Indira Mukherjee, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, Kolkata Police, clarified that the crime scene was appropriately managed and that all individuals present in a widely circulated photograph were authorized to be there. "The area was cordoned off, and the body was secured behind it," she said, emphasizing that the photo in question was taken after the inquest was completed on August 9.
The Kolkata Police's statement directly counters the CBI's claims, which suggested that the crime scene had been altered and that key procedures were not followed, further complicating the investigation. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, highlighted the delay in registering the FIR, which was only filed late at night after the victim had already been cremated. Mehta also pointed out the inconsistencies in the information provided to the victim's parents.
The CBI's probe revealed that the forensic report pointed to rape and murder, allegedly committed by Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer affiliated with the Kolkata Police. The incident occurred on August 9, when the semi-naked body of the trainee doctor, a second-year postgraduate student, was found in the seminar hall of the hospital.
