West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday dedicated the foundation day of the party's student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, to a woman trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month. Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a tragic loss and offering her condolences to the victim's family.
Eralielr on X, formerly Twitter, the CM said, “Today, on the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, I am dedicating it to our sister, whom we mourned the tragic loss of at RG Kar Hospital a few days ago. Expressing our heartfelt condolences and seeking immediate redress for that incident. Our hearts go out to all the women of all ages who have been victims of inhuman incidents. We are deeply sad.”
Banerjee also highlighted the significant social role of students and youth, urging them to stay committed to building a better future. "It is the task of student society to give the dream of a new day by keeping the society and culture awake and to inspire everyone around with the bright vows of a new day," she added.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid growing criticism from students, doctors, and BJP leaders who are demanding her resignation over the incident. On Tuesday, members of the newly formed student group 'Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj' and other organizations held a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally in Kolkata, protesting the rape and murder. The rally, deemed "illegal" by state police, resulted in violent clashes as protesters attempted to breach barricades, leading to a lathi-charge and the use of tear gas by the police.
